Eileen Lawrence pleaded guilty to deception and attempted deception. Her offending took place between 2010 and 2016. Her husband Patrick Lawrence pleaded guilty to deception and attempted deception committed between 2013 and 2018.
Their son Tom Lawrence pleaded guilty to one count of attempted deception in 2016. His brother John Lawrence pleaded guilty to deception and attempted deception committed between 2014 and 2016. On 14 March 2025, Judge Nolan sentenced Patrick to two years in prison and gave Tom and John one-year suspended sentences. He said the sons were children at the time and there was evidence they had been used as conduits and placed under some pressure.
The family made personal injury claims for road traffic accidents and falls under false names. Most failed, but some were paid. Detective Garda Ivor Scully said the false names concealed previous claims. An insurance company hired a private investigator, and the family were arrested and interviewed in 2019.
Eileen made five claims under two false identities; one resulted in a €15,000 payment in 2014. Patrick made four claims under two false names, with one payment of €9,370. Tom made an unsuccessful claim, while one of John's four claims yielded €6,155 in 2015.
Eileen's counsel, John Berry SC, said she was the primary carer for a son with additional needs and also cared for her husband and other relatives. Patrick's counsel, Roderick O’Hanlon SC, said he had medical and mental health issues, regretted the offending and had not reoffended.
Grandmother Winnifred Lawrence had previously received a three-and-a-half-year sentence, with the final 18 months suspended, for similar claims made between 2012 and 2014. She had fraudulently received €23,150 after legal expenses.
