Eamonn Cumberton pleads not guilty to murder charge

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Eamonn Cumberton has pleaded not guilty to the murder of Michael Barr at the Special Criminal Court. The proceedings were reported on 20 November 2017.

The charge concerns Mr Barr’s shooting at the Sunset House pub in Dublin on 25 April 2016.

Prosecuting counsel Dominic McGinn said the prosecution’s case was that Mr Cumberton was linked to items found in a car, which were themselves linked to the shooting. A DNA profile recovered from Mr Cumberton was consistent with mixed profiles recovered from a baseball cap and rubber mask found in the car.

Mr Cumberton denies the charge. His defence counsel Bernard Condon said he would challenge every element of the case and formally objected to the jurisdiction of the non-jury Special Criminal Court.

The case was adjourned until the following day.
