A 17-year-old Dublin boy was sentenced to 28 months’ detention at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court on 22 January 2024. He cannot be named for legal reasons.

He pleaded guilty to two counts of assault causing harm and one count of producing a vice grip. The first incident took place on a Luas in Dublin on 5 December 2022; the second took place in Dublin on 17 January 2023.

Judge Elma Sheahan cited the violence, the repeated and unprovoked attacks, and use of the vice grip as aggravating factors.

The judge imposed 28 months in detention, during which the teenager was to liaise with relevant services. She had initially proposed a global period of 34 months, with the final six months suspended under Probation Service supervision, but noted that the order would not be enforceable under the Children’s Act.

The proceedings were reported on 22 January 2024.
