Donal Colgan was on trial for murder at the Central Criminal Court. The proceedings were reported on 2 November 2017.
David Sheridan was fatally stabbed outside Luigi’s chip shop on North Strand Road, Dublin, on the night of 17 August 2014.
Colgan had pleaded guilty to manslaughter but not guilty to murder, and the State rejected the manslaughter plea.
Witnesses gave evidence about an alleged fight, a stabbing and injuries identified by a pathologist. Sgt Chris Cahill said Colgan told him in a Garda car after his arrest: “It was self defence. Two lads attacked me.”
The trial continued before Justice Tony Hunt and a jury after one juror was discharged.
