Denis Maguire was sentenced to 27 months’ imprisonment at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court on 25 November 2022. Judge Martin Nolan imposed the sentence.

Maguire pleaded guilty to one count of deception, dishonestly inducing Our Lady’s Hospice to sell a property at a loss on or around 5 March 2015. The proceedings were reported on 25 November 2022.

The Marbella property, which had been left to the charity, was sold for €37,500 in March 2015. Two independent valuations put its value above €240,000 when the offer was accepted in July 2014.

The hospice brought civil proceedings against Maguire in the High Court. He paid a settlement of more than €246,000, including €240,000 for the Spanish property.

Maguire had been responsible for managing properties left to the hospice. Judge Nolan said he had breached the organisation’s trust and described his actions as very serious.
