Dek Abdi Hassan, 31, was jailed for 16 months after pleading guilty to assault causing harm to a pedestrian on North Frederick Street, Dublin, on June 21, 2024. The man was 66 at the time and suffered a fractured hip after Hassan pushed him to the ground, Dublin Circuit Criminal Court heard.

The victim, now 68, told the court his injuries continue to cause pain and stiffness and limit his independence. He had to retire early from full-time work and relies on his sister for daily assistance, the court heard.

Judge Martin Nolan said Hassan’s actions were intentional and reckless as to their consequences, while accepting that he did not intend to cause the injuries. Defence counsel said Hassan had endured trauma in his home country and was intoxicated on the day of the assault.
