Dean Byrne and Patrick Gately had aggravated burglary sentences reduced

By Fionn Kelly

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Dean Byrne and Patrick Gately had their aggravated burglary sentences reduced by the Court of Appeal on 5 May 2017, from 20 years with the final four suspended to 18 years with four suspended.

The appeals arose from sentences imposed at Clonmel Circuit Criminal Court on 1 October 2015 for an aggravated burglary at a family home in Burnchurch, Killenaule, County Tipperary.

The court held that Byrne and Gately merited the most severe sentences, but found the difference between their terms and those imposed on the other appellants was excessive. It dismissed the appeals by Thomas Flynn, Patrick Joyce and John Joyce.
