New operator sought as Tipperary postmaster steps down

By Katie O'Donovan, Irish Independent

Residents of Fethard have been assured the town will retain its post office after their long-serving postmaster announced he is stepping down.

Barry Connolly, postmaster of Fethard Post Office, previously announced his decision to give up his role, a position held by both him and his late parents.

Now, Labour Party councillor Michael ‘Chicken’ Brennan has said that he has been working with both Mr Connolly and An Post to ensure that the service remains in Fethard, and that the changeover is as seamless as possible.

“Barry, along with his late parents Ann and Jimmy, provided an exceptional service to the people of Fethard for decades.

“Their commitment to the community is deeply appreciated, and I want to acknowledge the professionalism and dedication they have shown throughout their years of service,” Cllr Brennan said.

“Barry has assured me that the transition to a new operator will run smoothly and that every effort is being made to retain this vital service in our town,” the Labour councillor added.

The post office in Fethard was the scene of an armed robbery earlier this summer, in which a sum of money was taken. This is understood to have accelerated Mr Connolly’s decision.

Two men were later charged in connection with the robbery, which took place in broad daylight on May 27.

“While we all sympathise with Barry, Audrey and his staff following the recent traumatic robbery — and are thankful that no one was harmed — it is understandable that such an ordeal contributed to his decision to step away sooner than planned,” Cllr Brennan said.

Cllr Brennan said he had been in regular contact with An Post Retail Operations Manager Pat Cremins, who had assured him the company remained committed to keeping a post office in Fethard.

“Pat has confirmed to me that An Post is fully committed to maintaining a post office in Fethard, with a new premises to be located within the town,” he added.

It is understood that there has been considerable interest from potential operators who would like to run the post office in the town.

“I hope this update helps clarify the process and reassures everyone that An Post intends to remain in Fethard, continuing the long-standing service the Connolly family provided so faithfully over the years,” Cllr Brennan said.

An Post has not yet announced when the new operator or premises will be confirmed, although Cllr Brennan said he would continue to keep residents informed as the process progresses.
