David Weafer was jailed for 16 months at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court on 15 October 2019 after pleading guilty to assault causing harm and threatening Jennifer Staunton.

The proceedings were reported on 15 October 2019. The offences happened at the former family home on 10 February 2018, where Weafer threatened Staunton with a knife, kneed her in the face and head-butted her while their children were present.

Judge Martin Nolan imposed a three-year sentence and suspended its final 20 months, including on condition that Weafer stay away from Staunton and the family home.

Garda Mairead Burke said Weafer entered the house using a key, was drinking beer and refused to leave. The report said Staunton suffered facial swelling and that the children contacted emergency services.

Luigi Rea BL said Weafer abused alcohol, was intoxicated during the attack and had developed greater alcohol dependency after medication following a 2017 fall. He also said Weafer was extremely remorseful.
