David Murphy was sentenced at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court for two charges of assault causing harm to Angela Murdock and Andrew Murphy. He pleaded guilty. The proceedings were reported on 18 March 2015.

Judge Martin Nolan imposed a four-year prison sentence, suspending the final 18 months on condition that Murphy keep the peace and obey Probation Services instructions for one year after release. The sentence was backdated to December 2013, when he went into custody.

The report said Murphy stabbed his mother with a bread knife and stabbed his brother five times during the attack. Murphy said he had snapped, could not remember stabbing either victim and did not want to kill his mother. Michael Bowman SC said the incident was a brief period of craziness arising from difficult family relationships; he also said Murphy had been exposed to domestic violence and had completed personal-development courses in custody.
