This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Darren Redmond was sentenced to 18 years in prison, with the final three years suspended, for his part in the attack on Kevin Lunney. Mr Justice Tony Hunt imposed the sentence at the Special Criminal Court on 20 December 2021.

Redmond, Alan O’Brien, Luke O’Reilly and a man who cannot be named by court order pleaded not guilty to false imprisonment and intentionally causing serious harm to Lunney. The proceedings were reported on 17 June 2021.

Following the trial, Redmond, O’Brien and the man known as YZ were convicted of false imprisonment and intentionally causing harm to Lunney at a yard in Drumbrade, Ballinagh, Co Cavan, on 17 September 2019. Lunney had been kidnapped near his home in Co Fermanagh before being taken to Co Cavan, where he was tortured.

At sentencing, Mr Justice Hunt said Redmond had assisted at Drumbrade and in leaving Lunney on a country road. His culpability was reduced because there was doubt about whether he took part in the abduction. The court allowed for his youth and absence of previous convictions, suspending the final three years on condition that he be of good behaviour.

O’Brien was sentenced to 25 years and YZ to 30 years.

During the trial, Redmond’s lawyers disputed an attempt to link him to a phone number used in a Las Vegas booking.
