Darius Savickis opposed freezing order over prison assault award

By Gráinne Nolan

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Darius Savickis faced a High Court application to freeze €17,225 awarded to him after he was assaulted by a prison officer while serving his sentence in Castlerea prison. The proceedings were reported on 25 November 2016.

Savickis orally raped a 23-year-old woman as she walked home from work in Galway on 28 November 2005. He pleaded guilty to the rape. He was sentenced to six years’ imprisonment in 2009.

A High Court jury initially awarded him €225 for the prison assault, but the Court of Appeal increased the award to €17,225. The woman sought to freeze that money pending determination of her separate damages action against him.

His lawyers opposed the application. Conor Power SC, for the woman, said Savickis was refusing to supply an address on grounds of maintaining his privacy. It was submitted that this showed an intention to dissipate the award and frustrate the woman’s efforts to enforce any judgment she might obtain against him.

The case was due to resume the following week.
