Daniel Martin received a seven-year prison sentence at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court: Judge Martin Nolan imposed two years for a Luas stabbing and a car hijacking, followed by a consecutive five-year term for the assault on Wayne Donovan. The proceedings were reported on 14 July 2015.

Martin pleaded guilty to possession of a weapon, unlawful seizure of a car, assault causing harm and assault causing serious harm. The offences occurred between 5 August 2013 and 15 June 2014.

The report said Martin attacked Donovan with a stick and broken bottle, causing head and facial wounds. Donovan spent three days in intensive care and needed a blood transfusion. He subsequently made a full recovery, although subtle scarring remained. Martin told gardaí that men had accused him of being an informer and hit him earlier that night. He described being in a rage, affected by drugs and alcohol, and mistaking Donovan for someone involved in the earlier confrontation.

During an interview in May 2014 about the Luas stabbing, Martin claimed the other man had approached him with a knife, which he picked up after it fell during a struggle, stabbing the man three times. Regarding the hijacking, Martin said he had drunk 15 to 16 beers and admitted stabbing the driver after the driver tried to grab the blade. He also told gardaí he had learned that his terminally ill grandmother’s condition had deteriorated and did not care about himself without her.

Martin had no previous convictions. Gardaí accepted that his apologies to the victims were genuinely remorseful. In April 2015, he requested that his bail be revoked because he feared being unable to control his anger. Judge Martin Nolan described the attack on Donovan as a “savage assault” and said Martin’s propensity to violence had escalated. The judge also acknowledged his difficult upbringing and wish to reform.
