Cork woman jailed for toddler neglect and sexual abuse

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

A Cork woman was jailed for neglect and sexually abusing her toddler son at the Court of Appeal on 29 July 2024, when the court imposed three years’ imprisonment with no part suspended.

The woman, whose name is withheld to protect her son’s identity, had been convicted by a jury in June 2022 of wilful neglect between September 2010 and June 2015, and sexual assault and sexual exploitation between September 2013 and June 2015.

Her original sentence comprised three years for sexual assault and sexual exploitation and one year for child cruelty, with the terms concurrent; the sentencing judge suspended the remainder after she had served six and a half months.

The Court of Appeal dismissed her conviction appeal in May 2024. It ruled the sentence unduly lenient, quashed it and imposed three years on each sexual offence and one year for child cruelty, all concurrent and accounting for time already spent in prison.

The appeal court said the offending involved a very young child, a maternal relationship and a breach of trust. It also noted the woman’s mental health difficulties and low intellectual functioning, while finding that no evidence suggested she did not understand her actions.
