Celyn Eadon sentenced for assaulting prison officer

By Gráinne Nolan

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Celyn Eadon, already serving a life sentence for murdering his mother, was sentenced to two and a half years at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court on 5 November 2015. He pleaded guilty to assaulting a prison officer causing him harm. The assault took place at Mountjoy Prison on 15 April 2014. The proceedings were reported on 6 November 2015.

The report said Eadon requested paracetamol before picking up a kettle and throwing its contents at the officer. Boiling water struck the officer on the right side of his face and shoulder. A prison nurse treated him before he went to hospital. He was out of work for five weeks.

The court heard that Eadon had sustained irreversible organic brain damage through drug abuse in his teens. Anne Rowland BL, defending, said his medication had been altered in the week before the assault and he had been moved out of a padded cell that day. She said there had never been a satisfactory explanation for the attack and it had not been motivated by a grudge or revenge. She described him as extremely remorseful and said he was receiving psychiatric care, taking anti-psychotic medication and learning behaviours to manage his impulses.

Judge Martin Nolan noted that Eadon had no impulse control and was impulsively violent at the time, and said there had been no rational explanation for the attack. The sentence was ordered to run from 5 November 2015. The court heard that a subsequent sentence could not be made consecutive to a life term.
