Farhad Khorang (38), of Aras na Cluaine, Clondalkin, Dublin, received a 21-month suspended sentence for assault causing harm to his wife at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court. He pleaded guilty to the charge. The assault took place at their home on 18 November 2014. The proceedings were reported on 6 November 2015.

The woman said she and her baby had been locked in the apartment overnight after Khorang beat her during an argument. The report described bruises on her face and body and a bite mark inside her knee. Khorang admitted after arrest that he had struck and bitten her.

Garda Neil Canny said the woman later wished to drop the allegation and returned to Khorang after four days at a refuge. He said the Director of Public Prosecutions pursued the case despite this. Khorang had not come to Garda attention since his release on bail, and the garda said the marriage relationship seemed to have been resolved.

The garda agreed with Marc Murphy BL, defending, that the woman had made recent statements to gardaí wishing to recant. He further agreed there was no suggestion Khorang had harassed her after the assault and that child protection services had completed monitoring the family.

Khorang had no previous convictions. Judge Martin Nolan described the attack as “reprehensible” but said there was “no useful purpose” to imprisoning him. The judge said this would be Khorang’s first and last chance.
