Bryan Ryan loses murder conviction appeal
This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.
Bryan Ryan’s murder conviction appeal was dismissed by the Court of Appeal on 12 May 2016. The conviction concerned Ian Tobin’s murder at Fortlawn Park, Blanchardstown, on 27 May 2007.
Ryan argued that admissions made during garda interviews should have been excluded, and challenged the refusal to admit psychological evidence. The court held that the trial judge was better placed to resolve disputed factual issues about the interviews and had acted properly in admitting the admissions.
The Court of Appeal was not persuaded that the conviction was unsafe and affirmed it. The judgment records that Ryan had been convicted in March 2013 after a retrial, following the earlier conviction being quashed on a separate ground.
