Bajo Ziflai's rape conviction quashed by Court of Appeal

Bajo Ziflai’s nine-year sentence for rape was set aside by the Court of Appeal, which quashed his conviction and ordered a retrial, reported on 29 July 2023.

The court said the jury may not have fully understood how to assess lies relied on by the prosecution, and found the verdict unsafe and unsatisfactory. It ruled that the trial judge should have corrected the wording of her jury warning.

The conviction arose from four rape counts and one sexual assault count involving a woman he met on a dating website. Ziflai had appealed, arguing that the trial judge’s directions to the jury about lies were legally flawed.
