Andrzej Benko was jailed for 15 years for attempting to murder his wife at the Central Criminal Court on 11 April 2014.

He attacked Joanna Benko with a lump hammer while she slept at their home on Ladyswell Road, Mulhuddart, Dublin, on her birthday.

The court heard that her injuries caused lasting changes to her mobility, communication and ability to care for herself. Mr Justice Patrick McCarthy said the offence belonged in the most serious category, while accepting that Benko was deeply remorseful.
