Adam Nolan was committed to the Central Mental Hospital after a jury found him not guilty by reason of insanity of murdering Bryan Cassidy. The proceedings were reported on 6 June 2019.

Nolan pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to murder. The charge concerned the killing of Cassidy on 7 February 2018 at Burgh an Ri Walk, Balgaddy, Lucan, Co Dublin. The jury reached its unanimous verdict the week before the report, and Nolan was initially committed to hospital pending a report.

At the Central Criminal Court, consultant forensic psychiatrist Dr Damian Mohan recommended Nolan’s return to hospital. He said Nolan continued to experience psychotic symptoms and needed inpatient treatment. Ms Justice Eileen Creedon made the committal order under the Criminal Law Insanity Act.

A victim impact statement from Cassidy’s family said Ireland’s mental health system had failed two families. Dr Mohan said Nolan expressed remorse daily and was expected to remain under forensic mental health care for some time, with his progress reviewed every six months.
