Tomas Cypas has been sentenced to life imprisonment for murdering Juris Kokenbergs. A jury convicted Cypas by a 10–2 majority earlier this month; he had denied the charge. Judge Paul McDermott imposed the mandatory life sentence at the Central Criminal Court.
At sentencing, the court heard an impact statement from Kokenbergs’ two brothers, who described the pain of telling their elderly parents that their son had died. Defence counsel said Cypas wanted to apologise to the family for assaulting Kokenbergs and said he never meant to kill him.
