Aaron Carey was sentenced to seven and a half years, with the final 18 months suspended on strict conditions, at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court. Judge Martin Nolan imposed the sentence. The proceedings were reported on 25 May 2021.

Carey pleaded guilty to attempted burglary, robbery, attempted robbery, burglary, criminal damage, driving without a licence or insurance, and possessing articles for use in connection with theft. The offences were dated between 23 December 2019 and 7 February 2020, including robberies involving knives or a firearm and damage caused when he drove a stolen vehicle into a patrol car and two other cars.

The report said Carey had drug addiction and recently diagnosed psychiatric difficulties. His defence submitted that he had autism spectrum disorder, ADHD and severe cocaine difficulties, and that his family believed he needed residential treatment and support. The judge noted there had been no actual violence, but said Carey had terrified and endangered many people and was at high risk of reoffending unless circumstances changed.
