49-year-old Wicklow man remains anonymous after child-rape conviction

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

A 49-year-old Wicklow man remains anonymous after a child-rape conviction at the Central Criminal Court, with proceedings reported on 14 November 2019.

The man was convicted of repeatedly raping a neighbour's child in the late 1980s after a trial held the previous March.

At his sentencing hearing in May, Mr Justice Michael White imposed a seven-year sentence and continued an order protecting both identities.

The judge said he could not alter that order after the trial, while defence lawyers argued there was no legal basis to waive the victim's anonymity.
