The Labour Court recommended that Bus Eireann restore sickness benefit for 230 craft and maintenance grade workers and make retrospective payments from 1 September 2020. The recommendation was signed on 28 March 2023. Unite the Union and the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union sought reinstatement of the previous scheme and arrears for workers who had lost income when changes were made in 2017. Bus Eireann said it was willing to restore the original formula from 1 January 2023, but claimed arrears back to 2017 would cost more than €250,000. The Court cited uncertainty about when the dispute arose and the claim was lodged, the delay in progressing it, and the company’s economic challenges when recommending payments from the later date.
