Labour Court recommends Irish Cement offer quarry workers roles at their current grades

The Labour Court recommended that Irish Cement Limited offer 10 displaced quarry workers roles at or as close as possible to their current grades. The recommendation was dated 14 December 2018. If no role at a worker’s current grade is available on transfer, the worker should retain that grade for 12 months and get first refusal on vacancies at that grade. After that, the grade of the role being performed would become the worker’s substantive grade. Unite the Union said workers were being asked to choose between staying in the yard or returning to the quarry without knowing the financial value of each option. Irish Cement said the quarry agreement’s terms had improved and that returning workers would earn more than in their current roles. The company also said different pay for the same role did not fit its practices.
