The Labour Court recommended that Carey Glass’s proposal be accepted, with amendments, in full and final settlement of the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union’s claim for a 5% pay rise over two years. The recommendation, signed on 23 November 2016, provided for a 2% basic-pay increase from 1 November 2016 to 31 October 2017. It also recommended one-off vouchers, paid in three instalments, based on length of service: €200 for one to five years, €400 for five to 10 years, and €550 for 10 years or more. Carey Glass and the union represented workers at the company’s Nenagh plant. The union had sought a 5% increase over two years, saying members had gone more than eight years without a rise. Carey Glass rejected that claim, citing competitiveness and financial concerns. The recommendation also included an operational review between January and June 2017.
