Labour Court backs Cpi Ireland’s redundancy selection criteria

The Labour Court did not recommend changing Cpi Ireland’s decision to select a worker for redundancy, finding the employee retained had longer service. The dispute with the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union concerned whether selection should be based on seniority within a grade or length of service with the company. The union said custom and practice favoured seniority within the grade. Cpi Ireland said it applied last in, first out while retaining employees with the required skills. An earlier recommendation, accepted by both sides, established length of service as the agreed criterion. The recommendation was signed on 16 December 2011.
