The Labour Court upheld Iss Ireland Limited’s last-in, first-out redundancy selection and recommended that the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union accept it. The Court also recommended that ISS improve its ex-gratia offer by a sum equivalent to the rebate on each employee’s redundancy payment. ISS had agreed to reduce the value of its rail-carriage cleaning contract by €1.9 million over three years. It said the cost reduction required redundancies equivalent to 25.8 full-time posts across four stations. The union sought voluntary redundancies and four weeks’ pay per year of service; ISS had proposed last-in, first-out selection and two weeks’ pay per year plus statutory payments. The Court recommended further discussions about future work requirements, information for affected employees, reporting lines and deep cleaning. Its recommendation was signed on 11 March 2010.
