The Labour Court recommended new working-time arrangements for about 4,800 doctors represented by the Irish Medical Organisation in a dispute with the Health Service Executive. It recommended a five-day-in-seven working pattern from 1 July 2009, with core hours from 8am to 9pm on weekdays and 8am to 7pm at weekends. Minimum shifts would be six hours on weekdays and five hours at weekends. The Court recommended efforts to keep weekend rosters to a minimum, with rostering committees overseeing fair implementation. Daily hours should range from six to 13 on weekdays and five to 11 at weekends. Cost-increasing claims about off-site on-call arrangements were left for the second phase of negotiations. The recommendation was signed on 15 June 2009.
