The Labour Court recommended higher hourly rates, overtime premia, fortnightly pay and a sick pay scheme for creche workers at West Wood Club Limited in a recommendation dated 11 January 2006. The claims were brought by Services Industrial Professional Technical Union on behalf of 16 workers at the club in Clontarf.
The Court recommended hourly rates ranging from €8.24 to €10.80, depending on role and performance. It also recommended overtime premia for hours above 39 a week, including double time for Sunday work, and a scheme providing four weeks of sick leave a year at full pay less social welfare.
The union sought improved pay and conditions, including more frequent pay and sick pay. West Wood Club Limited did not recognise the union for collective bargaining and declined to attend the hearing. The union did not pursue its victimisation claim, and acknowledged that the Court could not deal with its claim for union recognition.
The Court said the dispute was properly before it and also recommended procedures for grievances and discipline, and measures to support workers' safety, health and welfare.
