The Labour Court recommended that the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union co-operate with John Player & Sons to arrange voluntary skeleton staffing for the Christmas period. The recommendation, dated 14 December 2000, concerned a union claim for premium payments for workers needed in the despatch area on 27, 28 and 29 December. The Court said the 1992 agreement allowed the company to designate days as annual leave or working days and, when closing but providing a limited service, to seek volunteers. The union had indicated it was willing to renegotiate the agreement if it no longer met the company’s needs.
