The Labour Court recommended staged pay increases for about 30 workers at Thomas McDonogh & Sons Limited’s builders providers operation in Ballybane, Galway. The recommendation was signed on 22 June 2000. The Court recommended a £5 weekly increase, paid two months retrospectively from acceptance, followed by £7.50 from 1 October 2000 and £2.50 from 1 December 2000, before the Programme for Prosperity and Fairness increase. It also recommended weekly service pay increases from 1 May 2000, ranging from £3 after five years’ service to £6 after 20 years. The increases were conditional on the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union helping achieve productivity and cost savings. The union had sought a £40 weekly increase plus higher service pay.
