In 1999, the Labour Court made recommendations on four claims involving Carton Brothers and the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union: sick pay, staffing in the cut-up area, supervisors’ pay and Box Weigh operators’ pay. The recommendation was dated 16 December. For sick pay, the parties agreed to ask the Industrial Relations Officer to clarify an earlier proposal. On staffing, the Court accepted that a fixed workforce was uncommercial when there was insufficient work and recommended talks on the company’s needs and safeguards for employees. For supervisors and Box Weigh operators, the Court recommended independent third-party assessments of changes to duties and whether those changes warranted higher pay.
