The Labour Court rejected the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union’s claim to move four Aircraft Cleaning Duty Supervisors at Aer Lingus to the top of their pay scale. The Court found the pay structures had not been breached and that the earnings of subordinate staff did not justify moving the supervisors to the scale maximum. In a recommendation dated 3 December 1999, the Court said Aer Lingus should annually indicate how many employees had benefited from its merit-based procedure. The union had argued that the cleaning supervisors should have parity with aircraft loading supervisors, two of whom had received merit increments. Aer Lingus said those increments reflected specific additional duties and that the four claimants were paid according to their contracts and agreements.
