The Labour Court recommended a one-off £1,500 payment to eight Bayer Diagnostics purchase material inspectors for training and study they had undertaken. The recommendation was dated 3 December 1999. The Amalgamated Engineering And Electrical Union Manufacturing, Science, Finance Division said workers had gained qualifications after management indicated these could lead to regrading. Bayer Diagnostics said the qualifications were needed for their existing duties and did not justify higher pay. The Court found workers understood the assurances as relating to regrading, but concluded they concerned access to promotion. It also recommended discussions between management and staff about future study that could help workers access promotional positions.
