In 1999, the Labour Court found no basis for a requested £30 weekly payment to six workers at Roadbinders Limited’s Mallow plant, but recommended that the company and the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union agree procedures for future use of outside contractors. The recommendation was dated 18 June 1999. The union said contractor use breached a 1983 agreement and sought compensation for drivers, plant operators and yardmen. Roadbinders said it needed contractors to meet business requirements. The Court accepted that employees were fully occupied and had not lost money through contractor use, and recommended an agreement covering circumstances where changes in trade levels affect employees’ earnings.
