Labour Court rejects Iarnrod Eireann worker’s first-class rail pass claim

In 1999, the Labour Court rejected a worker’s claim to retain a first-class rail pass after she was regraded at Iarnrod Eireann. The Court said the pass did not apply to her new grade, but recommended that the company consider offering her the option to return to her former grade because she had understood she would keep the pass. The union said management had assured her she could retain the pass. Iarnrod Eireann relied on the grade assimilation agreement, which provided that some staff could keep first-class travel while they remained in specified grades. The recommendation was dated 8 June 1999.
