In 1998, the Labour Court recommended that Arcon Mines and the Technical, Engineering And Electrical Union accept a proposed settlement in a pay-and-conditions dispute, and raise the tool-money start-up payment from £250 to £500, with annual payments of £250. The recommendation was dated 4 December. The dispute covered 11 maintenance craftworkers, including fitters and electricians. The union sought improvements to basic pay, shift pay, tool money, a bonus scheme and other conditions. Arcon said its offer reflected its limited capacity to take on additional costs. The Court considered the proposed solution fair and recommended a formula for future negotiations.
