In 1998, the Labour Court recommended that Aer Lingus keep its proposed A321 cabin crew complement on trial on the Dublin–London route. It also recommended that the parties agree the responsibilities and a premium for the most senior crew member in the rear position. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union had sought a cabin manager, two senior crew and five cabin crew members, citing workload and safety concerns. Aer Lingus proposed one senior and six or seven cabin crew members, saying the arrangement met service needs. The Court said stress and safety concerns should be referred to the appropriate authority. It noted that the rear position was to be filled by a crew member with at least 18 months’ experience. The recommendation was signed on 27 May 1998.
