In 1998, the Labour Court recommended accepting a company offer with a revised rate of £11.66 an hour for senior lift engineers, including first-hour travel and meal allowances. The rate was to apply from 12 October 1997. The dispute involved Lift And Escalator Companies and Technical Engineering And Electrical Union (Teeu). The union had sought £11 an hour for Field Engineers, while management rejected that proposal and put forward a different pay structure. The Court also criticised unofficial industrial action taken before agreed procedures had been exhausted. The recommendation said other rates should be scaled as in the employers' proposal and pension discussions should begin promptly.
