In 1996, the Labour Court recommended that Eastern Health Board (St. Ita's Hospital) make pay cheques available on Wednesdays to employees working both Thursdays and Fridays. The dispute concerned the withdrawal of cheque-cashing facilities for about 120 non-nursing staff after the National Irish Bank ended its mobile service in May 1995 following a robbery on site. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union had sought an alternative service, time off to cash cheques or compensation. The Court said reasonable efforts had been made to find an alternative and did not recommend compensation. Its recommendation was dated 9 May 1996.
