The Labour Court recommended that Aughinish Alumina increase its offer to back-up control room operators from £500 to £750 a year, alongside the higher rate paid while they performed control room duties. It said the company's offer should form a basis for resolving the dispute, but found no grounds to upgrade the workers to Grade 4. The recommendation was signed on 19 December 1995. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union sought a permanent Grade 4 upgrade for the 17 Grade 3 operators, arguing their back-up duties warranted it. Aughinish Alumina said it already paid the higher grade rate for hours spent doing those duties and opposed a permanent upgrade.
