The Labour Court recommended that Michell Ireland Limited give serious consideration to last-in, first-out when laying off or terminating workers. It accepted the immediate lay-off of probationers and the ending of casual employment, while saying management should explore alternative jobs for probationers where vacancies arose. The recommendation was signed on 18 December 1995. The Amalgamated Transport And General Workers Union challenged the company's decision to shed six workers amid a downturn. Michell Ireland Limited said falling trade and worldwide lower demand for leather products left it with no alternative but to reduce its workforce. The Court said communication between management, workers and their representatives should normally be a priority before employment reductions.
