In 1995, the Labour Court upheld Kingspan Building Products’s seniority-and-suitability approach to recruiting, laying off and recalling temporary workers. It recommended that cumulative service with the company be counted for pay purposes. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union had sought lay-offs strictly by seniority and objected to fixed-term contracts, which it said were introduced without consultation. The company said its approach accounted for suitability and operational needs. The Court investigated the dispute on 16 June and signed its recommendation on 29 June 1995.
