In 1994, the Labour Court recommended a 3% pay increase for two drivers at T. Stafford And Sons Ltd., subject to their making an acceptable contribution to offset increased company costs. The recommendation was signed on 16 December 1994. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union was the other party to the dispute. The company had sought work-practice concessions in return, including resuming morgue call-out duties. The union was prepared to consider a trade-off except for that work, which the drivers had stopped because of its unsocial hours and nature. The Court recommended that the parties meet immediately to resolve the issue.
