The Labour Court recommended that B & I Line recognise the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union’s right to represent the marine ratings who were its members. The recommendation was signed on 28 February 1994. The Seamens Union of Ireland had sole negotiating rights for the ratings, while a substantial number of workers had joined the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union. The Court said the question of whether they had properly transferred unions was for the Irish Congress of Trade Unions to decide under its rules.
