In 1993, the Labour Court recommended against the Technical, Engineering And Electrical Union’s claim for six electricians at Irish Fertilizer Industries (Arklow) to receive a permanent shift rate. The recommendation was dated 8 February 1993. The union argued that reduced staffing meant the electricians spent more time working shifts. The company said the existing arrangements enhanced their earnings and that granting the claim would undermine its pay structure. The Court found the claim to classify the whole group as shift workers was not warranted and recommended against conceding the union’s claim.
