Labour Court rejects unions’ claim for one temporary-worker lay-off list

In 1992, the Labour Court recommended that Cadbury (Ireland) P.L.C. retain its existing lay-off arrangements for temporary workers, rejecting the claims of the AMALGAMATED TRANSPORT AND GENERAL WORKERS' UNION and the SERVICES INDUSTRIAL PROFESSIONAL TECHNICAL UNION for one seniority list and a last-in, first-out system. The recommendation was signed on 27 November 1992. The unions said temporary workers should be selected for lay-off across the company’s full-time and evening part-time groups using a single list. The company argued that changing the system would disrupt production and increase costs.
