The Labour Court recommended that Vending Automatic Ltd pay an unnamed worker £5,000 in arrears for car expenses he incurred providing a car for his job. The recommendation, signed on 31 March 1992, also called for his monthly car allowance to rise to £200 from 1 January 1992, indexed to the CPI. As an alternative, the company could pay mileage at AA total-cost-per-mile rates. The court also recommended withdrawing a warning letter and ensuring the claim did not harm the worker’s future employment. The company did not attend the hearing, and the court described its failure to participate as unreasonable in the circumstances.
