Labour Court recommends non-rotating shifts at Ormonde Brick

The Labour Court recommended that the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union agree to non-rotating shifts at Ormonde Brick Limited, with evening and night premiums retained at one-fifth and one-third respectively and no premium for day work. The recommendation was signed on 20 December 1990. The union had sought a return to rotating shifts and higher premiums for workers on non-rotating shifts. The company argued that rotating shifts would raise labour costs and threaten its viability and jobs. The Court cited the company’s financial and competitive position and changed shift operations in its recommendation.
